Give Vent To All Your Feelings, Listen To Punk Rock

Punk rock is a genre of music that opposes everything that
traditional rock music represented. This kind of music came into
prominence during the mid 1970s in countries like Australia,
United States and the United Kingdom. However like all other
genres of music it is rather difficult to pin point the exact
time and place of origin. The exponents of punk music were bands
like The Clash, Ramones, The Velvet Underground, Dolls of New
York and Sex Pistols, in fact they were considered to be the
earlier vanguard of punk music. Punk rock music is very
aggressive and this is clearly evident in their dress, behavior,
music, aggressive attitude, mannerisms and everything else that
is associated with the punk musicians. Punk rock musicians had a
DIY attitude and they were not very bothered about socializing.
Punk rock became more famous in the United Kingdom in the 70s
then it was in any other place.
Punk Rock is characterized by certain particular features. Punk
rock is largely different from rock music that was popular in
the early 1970s; this kind of music was in no way tame, like the
rock music in earlier days was. The exponents of punk rock were
fed up of the music scene back in those days where all music
sounded similar, and people were getting increasingly tired of
listening to the same type of music again and again. It is
during this time and due to the increasingly familiar music
being dished out to music lovers, this genre of music came into
being. Some of the characteristic features of punk music are
angry messages against consumerism, stimulating stage presence,
aggression and short frantic songs. Typical punk music
instrument includes electric bass, 1 or 2 electric guitars, a
drum kit and there is a vocalist singing the songs.
Sometimes punk music vocals sound nasal and mostly the lyrics
of the songs are shouted rather then being sung in the
conventional way. Normally punk songs last for about two and two
and a half minutes, and sometimes the song may even last for
less then one minute. Complicated guitar solos are not
considered necessary for punk music, but one can find guitar
breaks to be very common. While some punk bands have taken a
soft rock approach with the guitar there are musicians that use
highly distorted power chords in their songs. The bass guitar
lines that are used are the most basic ones and helps in
carrying forward the songs melody. Punk music bassists generally
use plectrum instead of the traditional finger picking to play
the instrument as they make use of a rapid succession of notes.
The lyrics of punk music are generally very frank and
confrontational, and include comments on social and political
issues. There are several punk songs that became a trend setter,
some of them are Right to Work, God Save the Queen, Career
Opportunities and Anarchy in the UK. All these trend setter
songs were vocal about the prevailing anarchy in the social and
political system at that time. Punk Rock symbolizes rebellion
against any kind of disorder prevailing in a society.

Listen up Punk Rockers! A good friend of PUNK.tv, Josh Hayes, is about to launch VisualAnarchy.tv very soon. Keep an eye on this project for truth through media. A little excerpt taken from their about section:
Plain and Simple. Visual Anarchy was created for the Hardcore Scene. After being a cameraman and editor for 5 years, the founder Josh Hayes (an ex-cagefighter, tattoo enthusiast, and self professed punk rocker), had heard so many gripes from clients about their previous experiences with corporate style videographers and editors that he decided to start reaching out to the community.
“The goal is to let all the tattoo artists, dirtbikers, skateboarders, cagefighters, snowboarders, BMXers, rockers, etc.. know that there is a company out there that’s for them, and by them. A company who won’t try change their ideas or screw them over financially,” Hayes says. “Our clients aren’t the kind of people who work 9-5 jobs and wear suits to work. And neither are we.”
Visual Anarchy is also committed to political and social activism.
“Working closely with non-profits and other organizations whose major mission is to make the world a better place, is also extremely important to us and one of our primary goal.”
From Homeless Shelters to green sustainable architecture, Visual Anarchy is committed to carving out a niche in it’s community and making a difference.

Rock the Trend: Punk Chic
Author: Sasha
Remember Joan Jett and the Blackhearts “I Love Rock ‘N Roll”? Most of us tried to mimic it a bit at one point or another in our lives. Well, the look is back with an added touch of chic. The Punk Chic, or Subtle Punk, look is back in full effect for Fall this year. This trend is defined by Goth shades and carefully placed metal details on classic pieces for a subtle yet punk effect. If you want to rock this trend, read on to find out more. Tops. For this trend, go for tops made out of luxurious fabrics with fabulous detailing. A silk vest in moody mauve with decorative metal detailing all-over will give you a subtle, punk, edgy look and make passersby notice your outfit. Look for detailing that is small in size and grand in coverage of the pieces. Metal details that are too large will give you a biker look instead of punk chic. Bottoms. Since our inspiration is punk, keep pants slim or skinny in dark colors. Black is the ideal. Skinny black jeans (in denim or leather) with zipper detailing at the bottom of the leg and at the waist (front and back) will look undeniably punk. To soften the look and add the “chic”, go for a slouchy black sweater in cashmere or superfine wool. The mix of textures and details will make you seem ahead of the times whenever you step out. If you want to go for a different type of bottoms, a short skirt is also another great option. Go for one that is no longer than mid-thigh length, but comes in a flattering shape. Be sure the skirt you choose has plenty of zippers, buttons, studs, or other fun details. If short skirts aren’t your favorite, wear the short skirt with a pair of opaque dark tights or leggings in a coordinating color. Dresses. Keeping it clean is the way to go. This means dresses with simple shapes, such as shift or A-line, will work the best. To stay with this trend, be sure you choose a dress with plenty of pleating, studding, leather patches, etc. The punk will be in the details while the chic will be in the shape of the dress. Shoes & Accessories. Leather, patent leather, and suede are favorites for this trend. For shoes, keep the look punk but still chic, go for rounded studs and other metal details as opposed to pointy, sharp, or jagged looking ones. For handbags, go for large hobos in a sturdy and rugged material. You can keep the detail minimal here since you have metal detailing in one or more pieces of your ensemble. For jewelry, go for rubber, leather, or silver. Funky chain detailing on a smaller scale keeps jewelry looking punk without being intimidating. So now you are ready to be punk, subtle, and chic all at the same time. This trend is great to incorporate with many pieces of your wardrobe as well as it can be easily worn in tandem with other trends that are hot this season. To make sure that you are not overdoing it, try to wear no more than three studded or metal detailed pieces in the same outfit. Good luck and Happy Shopping!

Where to Look for Cool Punk Rock Tattoos That Would Make Henry Rollins Proud
Where to Look for Cool Punk Rock Tattoos That Would Make Henry Rollins Proud
Author: Joser Kovacs
Recently I went to a local parlor to have a gander at some punk rock tattoos and boy, was I stumped! I flicked through quite a number of designs but none caught my fancy as they all look pretty lame and unoriginal, while some are even ugly as sin! I thought to myself “Man I would never allow my body to be decorated with such dreadful looking creations. If I’m to have tattoos that would probably stick with me for the rest of my life, they shall be one I respect.” So I did what any other punk rock fan living in the world of information technology would do, I walked out of the tattoo parlor and went straight home to my trusty computer. I banked on the mighty search power of Google to help me find some great looking punk rock tattoos. The designs that I wanted must meet the following criteria: 1. Cool and stylish artwork. Of course, excellent design is a must as you do not want to get stuck with a hideous looking tattoo that makes you want save up for a tattoo removal surgery. 2. Uniqueness. Have you seen some of the punk rock tattoos available out there? They completely lack originality and you might wind up having the same tattoo design like everybody else. This is completely unacceptable. Yes I know what you’re thinking; is it possible to find “unique” and “cool” punk rock tattoos online? I understand your concern as most of the offerings on the internet are cookie-cutter creations and what’s more, many tattoo artists are simply lazy to come up with new designs so they often resort to common lazy man’s tactics of switching the color or making extremely slight changes to a particular tattoo art in order to pass them off as fresh, brand new designs. Okay, so how do you look for a large selection of punk rock tattoos that meets the criteria that I’ve outlined above? Simple, when you’re surfing online, keep your eyes peeled for tattoo art databases. Unlike the typical tattoo shops samples and free websites which are laden with bland, uninspiring, zero-originality creations, most online tattoo art databases are constantly updated with terrific tattoo artwork that oozes creative flair. So if you’re looking for cool punk rock tattoos to add to your bodily collection, I’d recommend you head over to online tattoo art databases as they contain a lot of unique, rebellious designs that would make even legendary hardcore punk rocker Henry Rollins beam with pride.

15 Influential Punk Bands
by Nicole Lero
Source: HotPopRock
While this list is in no way inclusive of all influential punk bands — you would need to list hundreds — this list is a good representation of many punk bands that have helped to shape a scene over the years — as well as sibling scenes such as goth, emo, and hardcore.
01. The Ramones – This NYC band really helped to start it all in the mid-1970s and influenced countless others to follow in their shoes in their decades-spanning career.
02. The Clash – While this band is more mellow than a lot of the more influential punk bands of the 70s and 80s, their subversive messages were also able to reach a wider audience than many, which is incredibly punk.
03. The Sex Pistols – Sure, they were more style than substance, and many people believe they were manufactured to create a trend… but what is more influential than that?
04. Bad Brains – This early DC hardcore band influenced many bands over the course of their career. Although they had strong reggae influences, they were one of the definitive hardcore bands of the 1980s.
05. Rites of Spring – Also hailing from DC, this band is one of the most influential bands in the emo genre, and is often credited with starting the movement.
06. 7 Seconds – One of the first straight edge bands, the played a poppier style of music than many of their counterparts in the scene, but were instrumental in starting it off.
07. Minor Threat – This band truly brought straight edge to the punk masses, with a single album of songs about not drinking, smoking, or doing drugs.
08. The Stooges – Mixing garage rock and punk, this band put together different elements to create a unique sound that many have emulated over the years. Further, Iggy Pop’s stage presence was so intense, it changed the way people thought of punk rock performers forever.
09. The Damned – Dressed like vampires and playing spooky music that walked the line between punk and what is now known as goth, this is a band that was a true trailblazer in terms of re-defining, and creating, a genre.
10. Misfits – This New Jersey band, which focused (and still does) on primarially horror themes is essentially the first horror-punk band.
11. The New York Dolls – While their singer is best known as Buster Poindexter, back in the day, David Johansen and his crew, including the legendary Johnny Thunders, pushed boundaries and opened minds with both their appearance and music.
12. Fugazi – When Minor Threat ended, the band’s singer Ian MacKaye tried different projects, and one of them was Fugazi. This band is also instrumental in what has become known as modern-day emo.
13. The Rezillos – This Scottish band with both male and female vocals made punk rock fun, with silly songs and wacky, offbeat rhythms. They influenced many bands, including the B-52’s.
14. NOFX – Not the world’s most serious band, NOFX proved that you can play fast, snotty punk rock with a sense of humor, but more importantly, actual talent.
15. Blondie – While many women would love to claim the title of “the queen of punk rock,” there is no doubt that Blondie’s lead singer Debbie Harry holds it, and it still looks wonderful on her, even today.
Here’s hoping this list helped to explain some of the roots and influences of modern punk rock music.

Henry Rollins: Punk Rock’s Renaissance Man
Henry Rollins: Punk Rock’s Renaissance Man
Henry Rollins: Punk Rock’s Renaissance Man
Author: andrew.regan.2006@googlemail.com
Henry Rollins, born Henry Lawrence Garfield on February 13, 1961, first came to public attention as the new frontman for hardcore punk band Black Flag in 1981. His first recording with the band was the seminal ‘Damaged’, an album that continues to influence hardcore bands to this day. Unlike most of their peers, Black Flag were always trying to push the envelope of their music, incorporating influences from jazz, metal and contemporary classical music but an unforgivable faux pas for the punk rock elite. Thus, as the music evolved and slowed down, Black Flag started to turn away a considerable contingent of their original fan base, but later releases, such as 1984’s ‘My War’ would go on to influence groundbreaking bands like Mudhoney and Nirvana.
After the break-up of Black Flag in 1986, Rollins went on to front his own Rollins Band, slowly becoming an alternative music icon as he was pushed further into the spotlight. The Rollins Band was eventually signed to DreamWorks and their 1994 release ‘Weight’ spawned two international hits, “Liar” and “Disconnect”, both of which received considerable airplay on MTV. The band continued to record and tour until it dissolved in 2001, leaving Henry to concentrate more on his spoken-word career and writing.
As a spoken-word artist Rollins regales audiences with his experiences travelling around the world, socio-political musings and anecdotes from his time in bands in a lucid style reminiscent of Lenny Bruce and Bill Hicks. It is far removed from normal stand-up comedy about relationships, shoes and lampshades, and an average Henry Rollins spoken-word performance lasts about two and a half to three hours. While Henry was doing spoken-word performances – even while in Black Flag – his best material has been in the last 10 years and has given him a loyal fanbase around the world.
As a writer, Henry is best known for his tour diaries, the Black Coffee Blues trilogy and ‘Get in the Van: On the Road with Black Flag’. Written in locations as diverse as hotels in London to the jungles of Africa, it provides insight into the world of the touring musician and the highs and lows that come with commercial success and failure. An abridged audiobook reading of ‘Get in the Van’ was awarded a Grammy in 1995.
Henry continues to tour for about 9 months of every year, and was last in Britain this summer, which included four sold-out performances during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He is due to return to these shores early next year, doing 8 dates across the UK and Ireland in January and February, proving that even after over a quarter of a century on stage, punk rock’s renaissance man isn’t slowing down just yet.

The Cure – Band Review
The Cure – Band Review
The Cure – Band Review
Author: Christina Pomoni
It feels like yesterday when I heard the music of The Cure for the first time. And although it’s been over twenty years I still remember it with the same nostalgia and sentimentality. Maybe because The Cure produced a unique post-punk psychedelic euphoria and an incredibly unusual chain reaction that shivered my spine. Maybe because The Cure bridged the gap between the punk and the pop; they managed their sound manners with sadness and rage; they established their own style creating armies of fans and imitators around the globe. The Cure built their myth using selective ingredients from their work and their life; and they have become a real cure for the souls of millions of people, who have cried, laughed, danced, and passed endless nights thinking about the meaning of life and the dark side of things.
Robert Smith, a dark personality himself, melancholic, eccentric, strange, unstable, had all those virtues that a person should have in order to create artistically. His amazing verses and his peculiar way to pronounce them soon idolized him to the eyes of the group’s fans and made The Cure the vehicle of his musical explorations and one of the most important post punk groups in the history of music. The Cure marked an entire generation with their music, their pioneering sound, their unique appearance and became an attitude of life for the young generation of the 80s.
In the early years, Smith’s melancholy was reflected on his dark verses. He was the dominant figure of the group, the composer and the singer. The first reward for the group was rewarded from Melody Maker in a competition for new groups. The Easy Cure got a new name and begun their magic journey of absolute creation that swept as a tycoon the psychedelic, pop, dark Gothic, rock and punk sounds and converted them into the sound of The Cure. During this journey, the group produced records that shook the global audience such as “Boys don’t cry”, “Pornography”, “Disintegration” and many others with tracks that literally brought up and stigmatised the generation of the 80s and the 90s.
The Cure’s success is also attributed to the fact that the group is not a one-dimensional Goth-punk band. The Cure are the post punk of “Three Imaginary Boys”, the funk of “Hot Hot Hot”, the pop of “Close To Me” and the overflowing love of “Just Like Heaven”. Even in their darkest moments from “Faith” or “Disintegration” they are more influenced from the French Existentialism (”Killing an Arab” is based on the “Etranger” of Albert Camus) than from the German roots of Bauhaus or The Sisters of Mercy, who would perfectly fit in Berlin during the Third Reich. The only group that could share the sense of loneliness and isolation is Joy Division. However, even after Ian Curtis’ suicide and the group’s rebirth as New Order, Joy Division suffer from an one-dimensional style, from which they cannot not escape, and they cover themselves with a new name, while being the patriarchs of the dance music. On the contrary, The Cure mix different music styles and produce great songs.
No matter how much light the music industry pours on the glamorous figure of Robert Smith, the dark side of music remains dark. Robert never wanted to see the cheerful side of life; at least not musically; His 25-years course with The Cure is a maelstrom of melancholy and gloom, which captures our souls and makes us think, open our minds, see our lives from a different perspective, value our time and set priorities. Smith’s lyrics practically save us from the emptiness of the trendy bullshit; fortunately for all of us. And this is the greatest contribution of The Cure to the society: they have created great thinkers.

What does a Punk Rock T-shirt mean for a real Punk Rock band fan? I am sure; it is not just a tee or a hood that he or she wears on a regular basis. No doubt, it is more than a stylish and cool piece of clothes a fan feels attractive and self confident in. it is something beyond other people and maybe the fan himself understanding.
If you ask for instance, a Nirvana fan, why he likes his Punk Rock T-shirt with a band photo on it that much, he probably won’t be able to give exact answer, but the fact the treats it like something very pressures is out of the question. Any way, why should we care or wonder why he likes this thing very much, this Punk Rock T-shirt makes him feel better and more self expressed and it is great.
Can you imagine a Punk Rock fan without a Punk Rock T-shirt? Of course not! He will never put on anything in pink or orange colors for that would be uneatable according to the punks’ way of life. Punks’ major colors are black, grey and other dark colors. The colors that symbolize sadness and desperateness, the most depressive colors that reflect Punks’ attitude towards life are Punk colors. Kurt Cobain T-shirt, dark and old jeans, cheap footwear, tattoos and piercing – these are the most common attributes of a real punk.
There are hundreds of Punk Rock bands, many thousands of Punks and millions of Punk Rock T-shirts, but for every Punk his Punk Rock T-shirt is so unique and special, because he was choosing it with special care. It may seem strange but fan do pay much attention to what they wear, as the clothes they wear is a part and partial of their life style. Businessmen wear suits, ties and shoes, but punks wear their favorite Punk Rock Tees.
T-shirts for fans are of such great importance to them, because they help to express their inner word, mood and, what is most important, their musical tastes. It is not a secret that especially teens feel extreme need to let the whole word know about them, to tell everyone that they are a separate world with its unique feelings, rules and fears. Teenagers want to look like punk rock starts on TV screens, they want to act like they, wear clothes like they wear and to express their admiration of them – these are some of basic reasons why they wear Punk Rock T-shirts.
But understanding music itself comes with time, first it is a simple imitation resulted in influence that comes from mass media and wearing Punk Rock T-shirt is a primitive following general rules, which by the way is paid much attention to. Later this devotion becomes more apprehended, it is come the higher level if the person becomes music literate or simply more life experienced. Music tastes break the limits of punk rock, change or develop when the person becomes older, but his first and favorite Punk Rock T-shirt will always remain something untouchable.
