Give Vent To All Your Feelings, Listen To Punk Rock

Punk rock is a genre of music that opposes everything that
traditional rock music represented. This kind of music came into
prominence during the mid 1970s in countries like Australia,
United States and the United Kingdom. However like all other
genres of music it is rather difficult to pin point the exact
time and place of origin. The exponents of punk music were bands
like The Clash, Ramones, The Velvet Underground, Dolls of New
York and Sex Pistols, in fact they were considered to be the
earlier vanguard of punk music. Punk rock music is very
aggressive and this is clearly evident in their dress, behavior,
music, aggressive attitude, mannerisms and everything else that
is associated with the punk musicians. Punk rock musicians had a
DIY attitude and they were not very bothered about socializing.
Punk rock became more famous in the United Kingdom in the 70s
then it was in any other place.
Punk Rock is characterized by certain particular features. Punk
rock is largely different from rock music that was popular in
the early 1970s; this kind of music was in no way tame, like the
rock music in earlier days was. The exponents of punk rock were
fed up of the music scene back in those days where all music
sounded similar, and people were getting increasingly tired of
listening to the same type of music again and again. It is
during this time and due to the increasingly familiar music
being dished out to music lovers, this genre of music came into
being. Some of the characteristic features of punk music are
angry messages against consumerism, stimulating stage presence,
aggression and short frantic songs. Typical punk music
instrument includes electric bass, 1 or 2 electric guitars, a
drum kit and there is a vocalist singing the songs.
Sometimes punk music vocals sound nasal and mostly the lyrics
of the songs are shouted rather then being sung in the
conventional way. Normally punk songs last for about two and two
and a half minutes, and sometimes the song may even last for
less then one minute. Complicated guitar solos are not
considered necessary for punk music, but one can find guitar
breaks to be very common. While some punk bands have taken a
soft rock approach with the guitar there are musicians that use
highly distorted power chords in their songs. The bass guitar
lines that are used are the most basic ones and helps in
carrying forward the songs melody. Punk music bassists generally
use plectrum instead of the traditional finger picking to play
the instrument as they make use of a rapid succession of notes.
The lyrics of punk music are generally very frank and
confrontational, and include comments on social and political
issues. There are several punk songs that became a trend setter,
some of them are Right to Work, God Save the Queen, Career
Opportunities and Anarchy in the UK. All these trend setter
songs were vocal about the prevailing anarchy in the social and
political system at that time. Punk Rock symbolizes rebellion
against any kind of disorder prevailing in a society.

A Brief History of Punk Music
A Brief History Of Punk Music
A Brief History Of Punk Music
Author: Christina Pomoni
Punk music emerged as a social and cultural phenomenon in the mid 70s. Reflecting the despair of an aggressively modern, young audience with a common anti-establishment mentality, punk expressed political views, opposition and controversy as a response to the sentimentality of flower-power rock of the early 70s. Promoting subversive ground-breaking sounds with minimal instrumentation, anchored by explosive guitar riffs, military drum tempo and anarchic lyrics, punk groups quickly became a massive cultural fact. Young people found a way to express themselves through the Do It Yourself (DIY) attitude reflected in distinctive clothing, hairstyle and artwork to convey a new radical ethos generated from punk groups.
The etymology of the word “punk” in the early 70s denoted a very low social status. Yet, in the appearance of the first punk groups in the mid 70s, the term punk in was used to describe anything diverse, anti-popular, controversial and anti-established. Denying any association to the mainstream, punk music was born and raised in the local, distinctively energetic and vibrant scenes of London and New York echoing the attitudes of a rebellious youth secured in shocking and outrageous music.
UK SCENE REVIEW
The UK Punk scene is widely viewed as the architect of the punk movement in the UK, but also the reason for the massive social attack on the British monarchy and nationalism. Being extremely angry on the system and highly-politicized, UK Punk groups managed to influence a whole generation with their spontaneously infectious outbreak of violence and isolation against commercialism and political correctness.
In the UK, punk managed to convert anarchy and chaos to genuine political philosophy brought forward by groups like Crass and Conflict. Struggling against the despotism of the political system, UK punk groups like Sex Pistols and The Clash possessed an outstanding onstage charisma and fierce music intelligence reflected in their live performances. Moreover, arousing an extreme passion and conveying an immediate impact to its astonished audience, UK Punk captured the messed up young kids and offered them the key to a brand new world, where anything was possible, allowed and grandiosely powerful.
Sex Pistols, The Clash, Siouxsie and The Banshees, The Damned, and Generation X are the most significant groups of the UK Punk Scene, which have greatly impacted UK post-punk groups like Joy Division, The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen, Bauhaus and many others.
US SCENE REVIEW
US Punk scene is the result of the great impact of the UK Punk scene on the globe. Although, rather immature and definitely less controversial than their UK partners, US punk groups emerged in the East and the West Coast communicating the need of a substantial audience in the States for original, hard, not easily absorbed and absolutely anti-mainstream music.
In the US, punk was fundamentally diverse than the UK scene in regards to violence and outburst. The US political system at the time was rather affecting the African Americans of the urban America than the socially acceptable white kids in the suburbs. Elementary musical knowledge reflected in brilliantly simplistic, yet astonishingly dominant lyrics of The Ramones provided a generation with minimalist catchy punk sounds. At the same time, US punk groups introduced musical speed and song brevity to start their revolution.
The most significant groups of the US Punk Scene are The Ramones, The Dead Kennedys, Blondie, Talking Heads, Stooges, MC5, and New York Dolls, which have greatly influenced US post-punk and alternative groups like Sonic Youth, Green Day, Nirvana and others.
Punk inevitably deflated in the early 80s, being hijacked by commercialism and trendy. Becoming a tool to increase profitability, punk soon became conventional and expected. Despite the efforts to heal the wounds with alternative rock groups, punk movement is long dead as its anti-establishment philosophy has long being integrated into mainstream culture.

The Arrival of Punk Rock
The Arrival Of Punk Rock
The Arrival Of Punk Rock
Author: Patrick Omari
Punk is described in the dictionary as a ‘loud, fast-moving, and aggressive form of rock music, popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s’. So, with bands in the 90s and 00s still being labelled as punk, did it really end in the early 80s and if so, why did punk-rock disappear?
The style of music, attitude and fashion that would evolve into ‘punk-rock’ began with the garage rock bands of the late 1960s. Velvet Underground and the Stooges would pave the way for the mohawked, safety-pinned punks of the 1970s, with their raw sound and apparent embrace of the anti-image.
Punk rock, as we know it now, first surfaced in the mid 1970s when the USA, UK and Australia saw the arrival of fast, edgy, simple songs that shocked the music industry to its core. Punk evolved from garage rock and stripped music of its complexities to create a short, sharp sound that contrasted dramatically with the glam-rock and disco of the era.
The sounds coming from USA seemed to find their spiritual home in New York City at the CBGB club in Manhattan. CBGBs began life as a bar, before reopening as a rock club in late 1973. Early Television gigs would set the tone of the club, as the punk sound would gradually gain momentum in the New York music scene. The Ramones, godfathers of three-chord punk, would play their first gig at the venue on August 16, 1974.
Across the Atlantic Ocean, the British were in the middle of the recession and the working classes were looking for an outlet. The Sex Pistols, the new band managed by Malcolm McLaren, played their first ever gig at St. Martin’s College on November 6, 1975. The Sex Pistols, fronted by punk icon Johnny Rotten, epitomised the anarchy, anger and fury of England’s youth and quickly gained notoriety for their fast, furious and chaotic performances.
The influence of the Ramones clearly went further than the New York scene. Britain embraced the punk rock movement with some of the most-influential bands originating in the English scene, The Clash, The Damned and Buzzcocks as well as Cockney Rejects and Crass. However, punk wasn’t limited to the UK and USA as the antipodean punks would follow on from the New York and London.
Australia was the next country to face the punk invasion when The Saints released their first single in 1976. Formed in Brisbane in 1974, The Saints demonstrated the same quick, raw sounds as their overseas contemporaries. Bob Geldof put the Australian band in the same bracket as the influential UK punks when he said “Rock music in the 70s was changed by three bands – the Sex Pistols, the Ramones and The Saints.”
On December 1, 1976, the Sex Pistols appeared on Thames Today, a prime-time London TV show. The show’s host, Bill Grundy, inadvisably goaded the band and provoked a foul-mouthed response from guitarist Steve Jones. The profanities would spark media controversy that would only serve to fuel the fire of punk in the British youth. Punk had truly arrived.
As punk moved from the underground clubs to the mainstream, the fashion, attitude and behaviour would be replicated. The Sex Pistols would self-destruct after just one studio album at the end of a tour of the US. At the end of a chaotic gig at the Winterland Ballroom on January 1978, Johnny Rotten addressed the crowd with “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?”. This appeared to be mocking the crowd, however, it was the same feeling that Rotten had while playing in a band where he felt let down and isolated. Rotten left The Pistols and the band was finished.
Although the Pistols would attempt to carry under on under Malcolm McLaren’s guidance, the band was finished. As soon as punk had arrived, the genre had its first high-profile casualty. The Ramones would continue touring and playing for about 22 years, with a consistent line-up. The Clash would evolve and develop, becoming a major success in the USA disappointing many of their original fan-base with their newer, polished sound.
Punk arrived amidst a barrage of spit and obscenities, with such a fierce intensity that its shelf-life was inevitably short. As soon as the mainstream caught on to its popularity in the underground, pop-culture diluted the anarchic, angry, rage into a more profitable and contrived revolution. Punk bands wore the right clothes and said the right things to make some people lot of money.
Malcolm McLaren would epitomise this attitude with the amount of merchandise, recordings and eventually a movie to which he would attach the Sex Pistols name. It had begun as a snarl against the establishment but had quickly become a way to make a lot of money from a few ambitious boys from London. The time had passed, punk had erupted and dissolved in a heartbeat, but its influence would be felt for many years to come.

Rebel Culture to Fashion Statement-Punk Hairstyles
Rebel Culture to Fashion Statement-Punk Hairstyles

Punk hairstyles those bizarre, colorful things that you see in high streets, villages and black-painted teenage bedrooms! I’m not a punk and have never been one, but I have always been fascinated by the whole punk look and ideology – probably because I was a teenager at the very time that punk exploded, kicking, screaming, swearing and spitting, into popular culture.
Punk hairstyles are assertive and attention-getting. Punk hairstyles have always been liked by the young and insubordinate and have still not lost their charm. Punk hairstyle intends wild personalities and signifies the wild and reckless part of a person’s personality. Today, perception towards these hairstyles changed drastically and more and more people choose this glance, to seem fresh and elegant.
Most people can accurately identify punk styles because of their highly visible characteristics: wild colors, startling cuts, and funky styles. But not every unique hair style can be classified as punk, and if you are truly interested in the rebel look you should understand how each of these characteristics can be used to create a unique and vibrant style.
The Punk hairstyle can be explained as something unique or peculiar hairstyle. The punk hairstyle trend belongs to 1970s, 1980s and so on. But the history and research tells that it actually belongs to 1970s. The style was born in the late 70s as part of punk rock’s fashion. Punk rock was an anti-establishment music movement that began around 1976. Punk rock musicians often wore strange (punk) hairstyles.
How does one choose a punk hairstyle? Focus on these three aspects: color, cut, and style. Color should be bold and bright and usually hair has to be dyed to achieve the desired effect. Popular colors are often colors that don’t occur naturally; pink, blue, or green. Harsh blacks and super light white blondes are also good. Colors can also be combined or used to highlight certain areas of the hair such as bangs, a Mohawk, etc.
Punk hairstyles are recognized as a symbol of the wacky and the weird! While some young teens opt for punk hairstyles only to be ‘in’ with the latest look, others find it as a way to rebel against the society! Youngsters have willingly gone beyond the ordinary to flaunt punk hairstyles causing quite a sensation.
Punk hairstyles for long hair – Part a section of bang from ear to ear and clip it out of the way. From that part to your crown, lift sections of hair straight up and starting close to the ends, comb straight down to your scalp. Continue until you have lots of height. When you’re finished teasing your hair, take some of the reserved bang and smooth it over the teased area. Part the remaining bang in the middle and let it frame your face. Finish with a super hold hairspray.
In conclusion, punk style relies on many different aspects to create an image. In addition to your other fashion choices, the color, cut, and style of your hair can help you to achieve your desired look. Remember that nothing is too wild for punk style, in fact, the more outrageous, the better. Rock on!
